Courtney Bennett is a local, 23-year-old playwright and actor who you may have seen provide a dynamic performance as Annie Sullivan in the Ti-Ahwaga Player's recent production of "The Miracle Worker." Not only did she write "What She Saw," but she will be playing the leading role in this premiere performance of the play.
"Everyday we read headlines about death, violence, disaster, and tragedy," Bennett said. "With this play, I wanted to look at what happens to the people behind the headlines, when the public has moved on and stopped caring. The tragedy ends and fades for us. Does it ever end for them?"
Bennett lost one of her closest friends when she younger, and while she said that this play isn't about that, she did say that a lot of her writing has dealt with either death or finding the meaning of life since.
"As a society, we have grown numb to the pain of others," Bennett said. "We have lost some of our compassion, and I am hoping to bring some of that back by using this play to reach into that center of the audience's heart."
