Since its beginnings, the
Ti-Ahwaga Community Players have brought quality live theater to Tioga
County and the
surrounding communities for four decades. Their only motivation being the
shear joy of entertaining. Past and present members of this
non-profit organization have provided audiences with drama, laughter,
music and dance
in well over 100 productions. 1998 celebrated the 40th anniversary
of TCP and a new direction for the organization.
The Early Years
Formed in 1958, TCP has staged at least one show a year since 1959. This
has earned the Ti-Ahwaga Players the proud distinction of being one of the oldest
continually active community theater group in upstate New York.
This distinction is especially impressive when considering the fact that
TCP has never had a permanent physical location to call a home. Over the
years the group has performed in schools, churches, community halls and hotels.
You name the place
and
we probably either played there or very seriously considered it. That
is until now, but more on that later.
Community Theater
TCP has been able to capitalize on there mobility
by involving new people with each location. TCP truely
honors the "Community" part of its name by always welcoming new members,
whether their interests lie on stage or backstage. Though the group
is based in Owego, NY its members come from many surrounding communities
and are comprised of a wide spectrum of society. Artists, students,
homemakers, business and professionals all work together to make live
theater happen right here in Tioga County.
New Direction
In 1997, TCP took a great leap into the unknown and purchased a building
which became their permanent home. Located on Delphine St.
in the village of Owego the former food processing plant has been
transformed into a quality theater space that is the players wish that
all members of the community can benefit from.
